An efficient and highly useful tool in urban planning is the 3D city model. It can provide urban planners as well as the public with an easy and comprehensible illustration of e.g. major future construction projects.

COWI India develops 3D city models of various urban structures. The 3D city models are created on the basis of already established basic maps like orthophotos and height models and can be used for 3D visualization of new building- or infrastructure projects.

Efficient tool in urban planning

3D city models serve as an efficient tool for various urban planning purposes. One of the major advantages of 3D models is their ability to provide an easy and more comprehensible overview of major construction projects, urban design, development and other high level urban investments.

A 3D visualization presents planned events 'in space' in an easier format than an ordinary map, engineering drawing or other computer generated sheets.

Improved basis for decision

Urban planners can also use 3D visualizations to market ideas to the public as well as non-technical decision-makers.

3D visualizations make it possible to present complex problems in a reasonable way and are therefore suitable for especially discussions with the various stakeholders about positive and negative consequences of a construction or infrastructure project.

The possibility of evaluating future construction work already at the draft stage ensures that other buildings as well as the public sphere of the city are taken into consideration when designing new buildings.
